B, we’re gonna talk about you.

Benzi is a six- or seven-year-old Barak Hound, a native breed of the Balkan countries known for their fabulous beards. And she does, in fact, have a fabulous beard. She’s also a stunning chocolate brown, a common color for the breed, but what’s uncommon about her is… well, everything else.

Benzi was rescued from a fuel station (hence her full name, Benzina) after being abandoned on the side of a highway. She was impossible to catch—until we were called in. She was difficult with other dogs, an absolute escape artist, and an unrepentant cat terrorizer. I hated her when she first arrived. Truly. But then, one stormy night, when the thunder was too much for her, she curled up onto my pillow and shook for hours. And I held her. And just like that, she was my girl.

Benzi lives with me full-time now, and she’s… well, mostly well-behaved. She adores swimming—so much so that she’ll stick her paw into my drinking water just to feel like she’s in it. She hates baths, though. And rain. And loud noises. But she loves me, and I love her.

She is, however, completely unadoptable. Not because she’s aggressive—she’s the sweetest dog in the world—but because she has an unfortunate (and painful) way of expressing happiness: by biting. Hard. Always from behind. Either the back of the knee or the butt. And while I can handle my joyful little land shark, I can’t exactly rehome a dog whose adoption warning would have to be, “Don’t let her get too happy.”
