Mozzie, Gin, and Iska are our third hybrid litter—but unlike the others, they’re wolf hybrids.

They came to us when they were four months old through a friend-of-a-friend rescue. A German woman had been feeding their mother throughout her pregnancy and was there for their birth, but by the time they were old enough to be weaned, it was clear that they were far too wild to travel with her when she had to return to Germany.

At just four months old, they were already extremely feral—and even now, at around five years old, they remain wary of humans.

I can touch all three of them in the right circumstances, but only the boys, Mozzie and Gin, are comfortable being handled most of the time.

• Mozzie (or “Mazolov,” as I call him) is the most social of the three. He does interact with some people besides me, but it takes time for him to warm up.

• Gin (full name “Gin Pette”) is similar, though he tends to bond only with me.

• Iska is the most elusive—she’s not aggressive, but she simply wants nothing to do with humans. She’s friendly in her own way but prefers to keep her distance.

Their pack dynamics are fascinating to watch. Since we suspect they are around 50% wolf, they have a unique bond that sets them apart from the rest of the sanctuary. Their behavior reflects strong instincts, and their interactions mimic those of a wild wolf pack.

Though they are smaller than most wolves, this is common for Bulgarian hybrids. Two of them even have one blue eye each, adding to their striking appearance.
