Ogi is a three-and-a-half-year-old Doberman who came to us through a friend specializing in Doberman rescues. They didn’t have room for him and asked if we could take him in.
He arrived at about a year and three months old, surrendered by his previous owners after reportedly biting a neighbor’s child—something that’s honestly hard to believe. Ogi is incredibly people-friendly, a classic Velcro dogwho wants to be as close as possible to his person at all times.
But what we quickly discovered is that Ogi is also very sick.
He has Wobbler Syndrome, a spinal neurological disorder that affects his neck and will eventually cause paralysis in his hind legs. On top of that, he suffers from complete spinal fusion, meaning all of his vertebrae are fused together, restricting movement and interfering with his digestion. The spinal nerve controlling his digestion is compressed, making it difficult for him to process food properly.
Because of these conditions, Ogi requires a special diet, constant monitoring, and a lot of extra care.
And to be honest? Ogi is a menace. He’s not great at sharing, doesn’t thrive in a pack, and can be downright annoying to the other dogs. He has a long history of getting lost, causing chaos, and nearly dying multiple times—and every single time, I’ve spent a fortune saving him. Within 24 hours of his recovery, I usually find myself screaming, "I should have just let you die!"
But here’s the thing. I wouldn’t trade him for anything.
The vets say if Ogi makes it to five years old, we’ll have done incredibly well. He’s now three and a half, and while we can see his condition deteriorating, our priority is quality of life over quantity.
There are treatments that could prolong his time with us, but they would mean more restrictions, more medications, and less joy. Instead, we choose to give him the best life possible—as long as he naturally has it. When the time comes, we’ll let him go peacefully and with dignity.
Until then, Ogi is here. A stubborn, lovable, impossible, ridiculous dog who drives me crazy every single day.
If you ever visit the farm, you’ll hear me yelling his name at least 20 times a day.
